I had a great math moment this weekend. I'm visiting my mother and that means I get to see my nieces. As we lingered after dinner, the girls, the 3 youngest granddaughters, talked about their calculus classes and AP exams. Nothing special about it to them -- something they always knew they'd be doing in high school. But their grandmother had stopped taking math in high school after her first year of algebra. Girls who wanted to have boyfriends didn't take math in the 1940s. (That grandmother did go on to become a civil engineer, so her story had a happy ending too.)
I like to learn. I like to know people who can do things I don't know how to do. I like to drink coffee and sit on my south St. Louis city stoop and chat with neighbors. Dinner can wait. Very blessed by the place I've chosen to call home.
