Boom.
It's late here, almost midnight, and there was just a boom.
I really dislike the 4th of July in the city. It's been worse, back when we had neighbors who regularly attempted to catch our alley trees on fire every 4th of July. But it's still a tad bit terrifying to hear those booms in the middle of the night.
I love my neighborhood. I love my city. But let's be honest. It can be scary and it can be a little gun-happy in the summertime. And when you hear a boom or a crack, that's what you think first. Someone just shot somebody else. Then you remember that it's almost July and people are just getting a headstart on their illegal fireworks displays.
And that 11:30 isn't late for everyone.

Thank goodness for the explanation. But yeah, it's disconcerting.
It's infuriating to me. My sweet, little old dog is terrified of them; during fireworks season, she spends about 4 hours a night shivering uncontrollably. This year she has serious heart problems and I'm won't be surprised if the weeks of illegal fireworks are more than she can handle. I know there's worse than this in the world, but this is so unnecessary!
Hi Jan!
This is my least favorite time of the year. It's starting to get seriously hot, and the firecrackers and parades are not really my thing. Oh, and the Japanese beetles are hatching.
We live in different worlds. If we heard a boom, I think I'd automatically think of fireworks ahead of gunshot. And that's even though I grew up in the countryside and gunshots were not unusual.
