Not quite Christmas in July, and to say October is overstating it a little because it's more like September, but with October's skies.
The weather broke last week and it is still that way (fixed). Usually St. Louis summers have little breaks in them, two or three days in the mid-80s followed by more hot. Last summer was an aberration with the entire month above 95 for the high. It was crazy hot. But this summer? We had a few hot weeks like normal, and then had a little break.
The little break is still here. Going on 8 or 9 days of break. The air conditioning off. The doors and windows flung open. Bright blue skies with fluffy white clouds. Happiness. And then today: rain, not thunderstorms, but straight up rain, downpouring at 5 in the morning and then heavy humid clouds the rest of the day. High of, what, 75 degrees? Gray white sky coaxing me to nap. No motivation to get anything done. Hibernation sounds good.
I'm sitting on my back porch staring at trees with bright green leaves. The magnolia still has a stray blossom or two. The redbud seedpods are bright green.
But it is October. I swear to you, those leaves should be on the ground.
I am not complaining. We are in the middle of dog days and it is supposed to oppressive. Instead I have a light blanket on my feet, a cat at my side, and a breeze blowing through the screens on the porch, making me ponder which box has the sweatshirts packed away.
It is a summer of many graces.
